AWASH – KOMBOLCHA – HARA GEBAYA RAILWAY PROJECT (ETHIOPIA)

“Awash – Kombolcha – Hara Gebeya Railway Project” consists in a 391km long single track line connecting northern Ethiopia (Weldia city) with the central region (Awash city), in the Ethiopian Rift Valley. The line is intended to carry 1.9 million passengers and 15.2 million ton freight each year on and after 2026.

The works carried out by Tunnelconsult consisted in the detailed design of the excavation of 7 tunnels by conventional methods (NATM), with different support types, from heavy (under umbrella) to very light (only shotcrete with locally rock bolting).

SAIDA MANNOUBIA TUNNEL
(TUNISIA)

In the framework of the “Réseau Ferroviaire Rapide (RFR)“ Project, the construction of the Saida Mannoubia railway tunnel is foreseen in the highly urbanized metropolitan area of Tunis. This large-diameter tunnel (excavation section of 100 m2) of 274 m length has been excavated in poor quality yellow clays and medium to low quality limestones; additional issues are the low overburden and the sensitive buildings at surface presence. The full face Adeco-RS excavation method has been foreseen; for this reason a fundamental role is played by the consolidation through fibreglass bolts of the soil core at tunnel face, which design has been based on accurate 3D FEM numerical computation.

Tunnelconsult made the detailed design of the tunnel portals and the tunnel excavation method, temporary supports and final lining, as well as the monitoring plan comprising tunnel convergences and surface settlements.
